The Violin
Joseph Curtin and Gregg Alf made this violin together in 1984, working as a collaborative team. The instrument is a bench copy of a 1758 Joannes Baptista Guadagnini known as the “Ex Sevcik.” It features a two piece top of medium wide grain and a two piece back of European maple, with medium wide flames descending from the center. The scroll and ribs display a somewhat narrower curl, and the scroll has been grafted, with the varnish antiqued to closely match the original Guadagnini.
The violin measures 353.5 mm in length, with an upper bout of 168 mm, a C bout of 112.5 mm, and a lower bout of 205.5 mm. The instrument produces a strong, brilliant tone that is notably soloistic in character.
The violin comes with meaningful documented history. Paperwork includes the original bill of sale from Joseph Curtin dated February 10, 1985, along with an insurance appraisal from Curtin and Alf dated April 20, 1995.
The Makers
Joseph Curtin and Gregg Alf worked together as one of the most respected collaborative violin making partnerships of the late twentieth century. Their instruments are known for combining rigorous historical research with modern scientific approaches to acoustics and construction. This bench copy of the Ex Sevcik Guadagnini reflects that combination directly, closely following an important historical model while meeting the tonal demands of a modern soloist.
