The Viola

This Capicchioni viola dates from 1930, early in the maker’s Rimini years. Marino Capicchioni settled in Rimini in 1926. So this instrument comes from his first years there.

The back measures 42.1 cm, or 16 1/2 in. The string length runs 38.05 cm, or 15 in. As a result, it suits a player who wants a full-sized viola.

The sound matches that size. The source describes it as very rich and powerful. In addition, it carries a strong, clear tone.

Capicchioni worked from Stradivari and Guarneri models with very precise workmanship. Therefore, a 1930 Capicchioni viola offers classic Italian design in a careful hand. For a serious player, that pairing holds real appeal.

Today, this Capicchioni viola from 1930 has moved on to a new player. Even so, it stands as a fine example of his craft.

The Maker

Marino Capicchioni came into the world in San Marino in 1895. He took up violin making in France. Later, he settled in Rimini, Italy, from 1926.

His work soon earned wide praise. From 1932, he won gold medals in Padua, Forli, Cremona and Rome. Then, in 1963, the Republic of San Marino erected a monument in his honour.

Capicchioni died in Rimini in 1977. Over his long career, he kept to precise workmanship on classic models. This 1930 Capicchioni viola shows that care in action.
