The Violin

This Pierre Joseph Hel violin from 1902 dates to the final year of the maker’s life. Hel died in 1902. So this instrument stands among the last works of his Lille shop.

Hel opened that shop in 1865. Over the next decades, he produced over 750 instruments there. That kind of output also points to a busy, respected shop. As a result, this 1902 violin by Pierre Joseph Hel closes a long and productive career.

Hel mostly worked from classical Cremonese patterns. However, Maggini also inspired him. Those two sources shaped the models that left his bench. That means a player meets a time-tested outline on this instrument.

His craftsmanship and materials were excellent. In addition, his work offers good sound quality and a fine brownish-red varnish. For a player, that combination makes a Hel instrument a serious tool rather than a curiosity.

Today, this 1902 Pierre Joseph Hel violin carries the weight of a full French career. That career ran from Mirecourt to Paris and finally to Lille.

The Maker

Pierre Joseph Hel lived from 1842 to 1902. He apprenticed in Mirecourt with Salzard. After that, he worked for Sébastien Vuillaume in Paris and for Nicolas Darche. Each stop added new skills to his craft.

In 1865, Hel opened his own shop in Lille. There he built over 750 instruments until his death in 1902. That output shows a steady and disciplined workshop.

His son, Pierre Jean Henri, followed him into the trade. So the Hel name continued in French violin making after 1902. As a result, the Pierre Joseph Hel violin from 1902 marks both an ending and a handoff.
