The Violin
Mirecourt craftsmanship defines this violin, which Albert Deblaye made in 1923. It stands as a fine example of his work, and it remains in excellent condition. Also, it comes from the decade when his skill as a copyist had fully matured.
The tone is beautiful, warm and bright. Under the ear, the violin produces a very pleasant sound, so the player hears sweetness rather than harshness. The back measures 36 cm.
That pleasant sound under the ear matters in daily practice. Many violins project well but feel edgy up close. However, this 1923 Albert Deblaye violin rewards the player as much as the listener. It also reflects the Italian models Deblaye studied throughout his career.
For a player, an Albert Deblaye violin from 1923 offers a French instrument with an Italian point of view. It suits a student or an amateur who wants comfort and warmth. In addition, its excellent condition means it needs no apology on stage. Finally, it gives access to a respected Mirecourt name at a sensible level.
The Maker
Albert Joseph Deblaye’s life began in Bouzemont, France, in 1874. His training then took him to Mirecourt. So the famous violin making town shaped him from the start.
His Mirecourt start gave him a firm grounding. However, he wanted wider experience. In 1897 he moved to Toulouse to work under Gautier. After three years there, he came back to Mirecourt and went into business with H. Meunier.
Deblaye soon became known as a fine copyist of the great Italian makers. Stradivari, Guarneri and Bergonzi all served as his models. Today, that skill explains why players still seek out an Albert Deblaye violin like this 1923 example. They want an Italian style voice from a French bench.
