Maker: Tubbs, James
Description: James Tubbs, son of William Tubbs, was born in London in 1835. He began as an apprentice under his father until 1860 when he opened his own shop in Soho. In 1864 he was employed by William Ebsworth Hill and worked for the Hill firm for most of his life. During his spectacular career, he received the special appointment of bow maker to the Duke of Edinburgh. Although he was English, many critics claim that his bows can be compared to the greatest French maker’s such as Tourte, Peccatte, and Voirin. This particular bow is in excellent condition, ebony and silver mounted, and still has the dark black coloring that Tubbs finished his sticks with. Exceptional weight and balance. Weight: 81.8g
