The Violin
Eugène F. Marchand made this violin in 1907. It has a back length of 35.6 cm and produces a bright, powerful tone well suited for a soloist.
The Maker
Eugène F. Marchand was born in Mirecourt, France in 1858. He trained as a pupil of Durand and Laurent before beginning his professional career. In 1890, he went on to work for Hill and Sons in London, one of the most prestigious violin dealers of the era. He later worked for Sylvestre in Paris in 1897.
Marchand established his own workshop in Paris in 1902. He earned a strong reputation as a marvelous replicator of older instruments, closely studying and reproducing the qualities of historic Italian models. This violin reflects that expertise, combining careful craftsmanship with a tone built for the concert stage.
