The Violin

This Georg Walter Gutter violin from 1950 remains in excellent condition. It shows excellent craftsmanship throughout. A subtle red varnish finishes the instrument. Its finish and workmanship both point to a maker at ease with his craft.

The sound is beautiful and warm. As a result, it rewards a player who values warmth in every register. Also, warmth like this flatters both solo lines and ensemble playing. The back measures 35.6 cm.

Gutter made this violin late in a long career, nearly three decades after he set up on his own. So it reflects a mature hand. It also carries the training of the Markneukirchen tradition.

For a player, a violin by Georg Walter Gutter offers Italian-inspired form with German precision. It suits an advancing student or a dedicated amateur. Also, its warm voice works well in chamber music. That is why this 1950 Georg Walter Gutter violin deserves attention.

The Maker

Born in 1890, Georg Walter Gutter trained with Oskar Zimmer in Markneukirchen from 1904 to 1907. He then worked as an assistant to Eugen Gärtner in Stuttgart. Next, he joined Anton Siebenhuner in Zurich.

Those years gave him a broad view of European workshop practice. In 1923 he established himself independently in Markneukirchen. As a result, he returned to the town where his training began.

Gutter specialized in copies of instruments by the Italian masters. That focus shaped the model and outline of his work. So a player gets a design rooted in the classic Italian patterns. Today, each violin by Georg Walter Gutter reflects that devotion to the Italian tradition.
