The Maker
Asa Warren White was born in Barre, Massachusetts in 1826. He began his career working for instrument dealer and publisher Henry M. Prentiss in Boston before partnering with his brother, Ira J. White, in 1849. White built the majority of his instruments in Boston, working out of his shop at 86 Tremont Street. His output consisted mostly of violins, along with some violas and cellos.
In 1888, White moved to Chicago, where he continued producing instruments, this time bearing labels marked with that city’s name. He returned to Boston later in life and died there in 1893. White’s instruments remain valued today as strong examples of nineteenth century American violin making.
