The Violin
Albert Fischer made this violin in 1975, and he numbered it 11 in his own output. It remains in excellent condition. A slab-cut maple back and matching sides show how carefully he chose his wood.
The sound is rich and powerful. This Albert Fischer violin carries the tonal focus that later earned him recognition at the Violin Society of America competitions. The back measures 35.7 cm.
As one of his earlier numbered instruments, this Albert Fischer violin shows a maker already sure of his hand. First, the construction is clean and precise. Second, the voice already has real weight behind it.
American violins of this era keep gaining ground with players. They offer solid construction and strong sound without the price of an older European instrument. Because this Albert Fischer violin carries both a documented number and a prize-winning maker, it stands out even in that company.
The Maker
Albert William Fischer grew up in Waukegan, Illinois, where he was born in 1912. At nineteen he won the Fisher Body Craftsman’s Guild coach-building competition. Judges picked his work from 64,000 entries, and the prize paid for university.
He then spent his career as a research and development engineer at General Motors. Meanwhile, he taught himself violin making. He worked mostly with domestic wood, and he finished his instruments with a terpene-resin varnish.
His engineering background shows in the precision of the work. Also, the VSA gave him certificates for tone in 1978 and again in 1982. That mix of craft and sound explains why an Albert Fischer violin still draws serious players today.
