The Violin
This violin, known as the “Rotondo,” was made by Alessandro Gagliano in 1710. It has a back length of 35.4 cm, with a back of one piece flamed maple and a top built in the same one piece fashion. Renowned violin expert Roger Hargrave described the Rotondo as the finest known example of Alessandro’s workmanship, a distinction reflected in its stunning artistry and flawless varnish work.
The Rotondo’s thick, lustrous varnish makes it one of the most visually striking violins to pass through Benning Violins. It has rarely been played over the years, kept instead as a collector’s item rather than a working musician’s instrument. As a result, it remains in pristine condition today. The violin carries certification from Emil Herrmann, Albert Caressa, and Rembert Wurlitzer, three of the most respected names in violin authentication history.
The Maker
Alessandro Gagliano stands as the founder of one of the great and prolific families in violin making history, and he is also recognized as the first known Neapolitan maker. Little is documented about his training, and his highly individual work differs markedly from that of his sons and descendants. Unlike his sons Nicolò and Gennaro, who followed Stradivari’s models, Alessandro developed his own designs. Some of these run slightly smaller or larger than convention, recalling the creative freedom found in the work of Guarneri del Gesù.
The Rotondo exemplifies this originality and stands as a defining example of Alessandro’s individual genius. Its artistry and craftsmanship helped secure his place among the greatest names in violin making history.
