The Violin

A Stradivari model dated 1973, this violin represents this maker’s mature work. The one piece maple back shows broad flames ascending from treble to bass, matched by maple ribs and a similarly figured scroll with a grafted neck. The two piece spruce top features straight, even grain of medium width. The red brown varnish over a golden ground has softened with regular use, adding warmth and depth. The back bears the maker’s handwritten pencil inscription: “Alfio Batelli da Firenze ITALIA fece anno 1973.”
