The Violin
This fine early-20th-century Italian violin remains in very good condition. It features a striking one-piece back of quarter-cut maple with broad, ascending flames, complemented by matching sides and a scroll carved from maple with medium figure. The two-piece spruce top displays an even, medium grain, finished in a beautifully transparent reddish-orange varnish. Certified by Reuning & Son, the instrument exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and tonal sophistication associated with great Turin work. Its sound is marked by a deep, resonant core and excellent projection, making it an inspiring choice for advanced players and professionals alike.
The Maker
Annibale Fagnola (1865–1939) rose from modest beginnings in Montiglio to become one of the foremost makers of the modern Italian school. After moving to Turin in 1894 he gained early support from dealer Orazio Roggero and earned medals in Genoa and Milan in 1906. His early violins closely followed Stradivari, Guadagnini, Pressenda and Rocca, often with rich deep red varnish. Over time his own style emerged, influenced most strongly by Pressenda. Known for superb craftsmanship, fine materials and excellent tonal results, his work became internationally recognized by 1930.
