The Violin
This exceptional Italian-made violin features a two-piece maple back with descending flames and a finely grained two-piece spruce top. The luminous orange-brown spirit varnish over a golden ground enhances both beauty and clarity. The violin displays masterful craftsmanship throughout, including a deeply carved scroll with strong blackened chamfers and precise purfling with distinctive bee stings. Fittings include mountain mahogany Hill-style pegs, a boxwood chinrest and tailpiece, and a Stradpet titanium adjuster. This rare and exceptional example of this maker is featured in Gabriele Carletti’s 1995 book on the maker.

The Maker
Ansaldo Poggi was one of the foremost violinmakers of the 20th century, celebrated for exceptional craftsmanship and artistry. Born in Villafontana di Medicina, he trained with Giuseppe Fiorini in the 1920s before developing his own style marked by narrow borders, thin purfling, and varnish ranging from reddish-orange to pinkish-yellow. Drawing on Stradivari and Guarneri models, he produced instruments admired for tonal brilliance, precision, and playability. Creating more than 300 violins, he became a favorite of leading musicians and remains among the most sought-after modern Italian makers.
