The Viola
A beautiful viola by Antonino Cavalazzi, this instrument features a two-piece maple back with medium-wide flames descending from the center joint, complemented by matching maple ribs and scroll. The two-piece spruce top displays straight grain that broadens toward the flanks. A full red-orange varnish over a warm yellow ground gives the viola a rich and attractive appearance. The viola has a warm, clear voice with a touch of brightness, offering excellent response and definition. Despite its smaller size, it has good projection, making it a comfortable and versatile choice for the player.
The Maker
Antonino Cavalazzi (1905–1987) was an Italian violin maker from Bagnacavallo in the province of Ravenna. A pupil of Domenico Veggi, he established himself professionally during the 1920s and later worked in Ravenna. Cavalazzi primarily built instruments on models inspired by Antonio Stradivari, combining classical Italian forms with clean, consistent workmanship. He was also known for his research into varnish and developed distinctive golden-yellow and orange-toned finishes. His instruments are respected examples of 20th-century Italian violin making.
