The Violin

Auguste Sebastien Bernardel made this Bernardel violin in 1838, on a Stradivari model. A striking one-piece maple back carries strong, attractive flame. Golden-red varnish complements the wood without overwhelming it.

The sound is powerful and rich, with clear projection and a wide range of colors. This Bernardel violin responds well in lyrical playing and in more intense passages alike. The back measures 35.9 cm.

He made it before the founding of Gand and Bernardel. So this Bernardel violin shows the maker working under his own name, in his prime, at the heart of the Paris trade.

For players who love the French sound, few names carry as much weight. The quality of the wood and the care in the varnish reflect the standards of the Paris trade in the 1830s. Also, the voice still competes with fine French violins at any level.

The Maker

Auguste Sebastien Bernardel lived from 1798 to 1870, and he stands as the patriarch of the Bernardel making family. His father trained him. Later he partnered with Eugene Gand to form the renowned Gand and Bernardel firm, one of the most influential Paris workshops of the 19th century.

His instruments show elegant craftsmanship, refined arching and a warm, responsive tone. His sons carried the work forward after him.

The Bernardel name remains a pillar of the great French tradition. Because Auguste Sebastien made this one himself, it sits among the most sought-after French instruments of the period. A Bernardel violin from his own bench, rather than from the later firm, is the one collectors watch for.
