The Violin

Kenneth Warren and Son certified this Bologna violin from 1925 as the work of an unknown maker in that city. The back is two pieces of quarter-cut maple, with narrow to medium flames running very slightly downward from the center joint. The ribs and scroll use matching wood.

The top is two pieces of spruce, mostly fine grain throughout, under a medium golden-brown varnish. This Bologna violin produces a dark, projecting tone. The back measures 35.4 cm.

A certified instrument without a famous name on the label opens a door for players. You get genuine Italian construction and sound at a more accessible level. That made this Bologna violin an excellent opportunity for a serious player.

Warren’s description documents exactly what the buyer was getting. First, the wood is named piece by piece. Second, the varnish is described. Finally, the city and date are certified. For a player who cares most about sound and construction, that is a well-documented choice.

The Maker

Bologna has a long history in Italian violin making. It runs from the lute and violin makers of the Renaissance to the busy workshops of the early 20th century.

Makers such as Raffaele Fiorini kept that tradition alive into the modern era. Fiorini taught Cesare Candi and Carlo Carletti, two names players still follow closely today.

So a Bologna violin from this period gives a player authentic Italian construction and character. Because this example carries a respected certificate, a buyer can trust its origin even without a named maker.

Certification

Kenneth Warren and Son, Ltd. certified this instrument as Bologna, circa 1925.
