The Cello

Made in Los Angeles in 1928, this C. G. Stewart cello, No. 33, displays attractive, understated workmanship. The two-piece maple back features narrow, even flames that descend slightly from the center joint, with matching maple used for the ribs and scroll. Its two-piece spruce top has narrow, consistent grain across its surface. Orange-brown varnish over a yellow ground, subtly colored by olive undertones, gives the cello a distinctive and mature appearance. Tonally, the instrument has a dark, direct voice with a focused response and clear projection.

The Maker

C. G. Stewart was an American cellist and cello maker active in Los Angeles during the early 20th century. A longtime member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, he specialized naturally in crafting cellos and continued making into the late 1930s. Stewart generally worked from a Stradivari model, often using orange-brown varnish and distinctive purfling that forms a point beneath the back button. His instruments are valued for their individual craftsmanship, strong tonal character, and connection to the early history of violin making in Los Angeles.
