The Violin

This Robertson and Hill violin is a 2017 collaboration between two American makers, Cameron Robertson and Kile Hill. Both trained in the Salt Lake City violin making tradition. They built this instrument together from start to finish.

The tone is rich and powerful. This Robertson and Hill violin brings the strengths of two experienced makers into a single instrument. The back measures 35.4 cm.

Collaborative instruments are less common than single-maker work. Because two trained pairs of eyes and hands went over every stage of construction, the standard stays high throughout.

For a player who wants a modern American instrument with a strong voice and careful workmanship, this Robertson and Hill violin was an excellent choice. First, the tone is rich. Second, the construction is solid. Finally, it is the kind of instrument that grows with its owner over many years.

The Maker

Kile Hill took an early interest in fine instruments, and he began playing the cello young. In 2000 he attended the Violin Making School of America in Salt Lake City. He then worked for several years at Scoggins and Scoggins, and with Stephanie Voss at the Voss Violin Shop in Atlanta. Today he makes violins, violas and cellos from his home workshop in McMinnville, Oregon.

Cameron Robertson graduated from the same school in 2007, under Peter Prier, Charles Woolf and George Meiwes. He worked at the Williams Gengakki Violin Shop in Atlanta, continued his training at the Oberlin restoration workshops, and later opened his own shop in Atlanta.

So every Robertson and Hill violin brings both makers’ skills to the bench at once.
