The Violin
This violin stands as an excellent example of the Becker family’s finest workmanship, dated 1957. It has a back length of 35.5 cm and delivers a powerful, soloist tone, equipped with a rich low end and a brilliant top end.
The Maker
Carl G. Becker was born in 1887 and completed his first violin at just 14 years old. He soon began working with Lyon and Healy before relocating to Chicago to work for William Lewis and Son. His son, Carl F. Becker, joined him at Lewis in 1937, and the two worked together for decades before formally establishing their own company, Carl Becker and Son, in 1968.
Carl F. Becker also served in the military before rejoining his father at William Lewis and Son in 1946. He went on to continue repairing and crafting instruments well into his late nineties, an extraordinary career spanning much of the twentieth century.
This violin reflects the close collaboration and shared dedication that defined the Becker family’s legacy in American violin making, standing today as a strong representation of their combined craftsmanship.
