Carl G. Becker, born in 1887, a renowned American violinmaker, achieved legendary status as a maker for crafting fine viola instruments across his eight-decade career. Beginning at age 14, his journey through prestigious workshops, like Lyon and Healy and William Lewis & Son, shaped his masterful approach to viola making. His deep understanding of the violist’s needs inspired him to create instruments of exceptional tonal quality and physical beauty. Working from his Wisconsin summer workshop and later with his son at Carl Becker and Son, he continued crafting and restoring instruments into his 90s, leaving an enduring legacy in the world of fine viola making.
