The Violin
This Carl Becker violin 1930 is a spectacular-sounding example from Carl G. Becker’s early period, numbered 248. It is a stunning Stradivari model. The two-piece back is gorgeous.
The sound is powerful, clear and rich, exactly what players expect from a Becker. This Carl Becker violin 1930 has a back length of 35.6 cm.
Instruments from the early 1930s show him at full confidence, only a few years after he began numbering his work. Because the number is documented, this violin is also straightforward to authenticate and insure.
That practical side matters as much as the sound. First, the condition is excellent. Second, the paperwork is simple. Finally, the even voice handles orchestral and solo playing alike. This Carl Becker violin 1930 is the kind of instrument that can serve a player for an entire career.
The Maker
Carl G. Becker was born in 1887, the son of a celebrated violin teacher and the grandson of the maker Herman Macklett. He finished his first violin at fourteen, began with Lyon and Healy in 1902, and joined William Lewis and Son in Chicago in 1924 as their leading connoisseur, maker and restorer.
From 1925 to 1947 he gave his summers to making new instruments at his lakeside home in Pickerel, Wisconsin. Then, in 1968, he and his son Carl F. Becker formed Carl Becker and Son. He worked into his late nineties.
His numbered instruments let collectors trace his development year by year. So a Carl Becker violin 1930 like this one remains a benchmark of American making.
