The Violin

This Carl Becker violin 1937 is a spectacular-sounding example of Carl G. Becker’s work, numbered 336. It is a stunning Stradivari model, and the one-piece back is gorgeous.

The sound is powerful, clear and rich. That is the hallmark of a Becker, and it is why professionals seek his instruments out. This Carl Becker violin 1937 has a back length of 35.7 cm.

A one-piece back is a special feature on any fine violin. Here it gives the instrument a striking appearance to match its voice. Also, he made it in the year his son joined him at William Lewis and Son, so it comes from a key moment in the family story.

Players who choose a Becker usually keep it for life. A well-kept example like this Carl Becker violin 1937 shows why. Its combination of beauty, projection and reliability has made instruments from this period some of the most requested American violins on the market.

The Maker

Carl G. Becker was born in 1887, the son of a celebrated violin teacher and the grandson of the maker Herman Macklett. He finished his first violin at fourteen and began with Lyon and Healy in 1902. In 1924 he joined William Lewis and Son in Chicago as their leading connoisseur, maker and restorer.

His son Carl F. Becker joined him at Lewis in 1937, and in 1968 the two formed Carl Becker and Son. Carl Sr. worked into his late nineties, and he established a dynasty of makers and restorers.

So a Carl Becker violin 1937 sits among the most respected American instruments of the 20th century. Players prize it for its sound, for its craftsmanship and for its place in the Becker history.
