The Violin
This Carl G. Becker violin from 1925 is a spectacular example of his best-period work. It is a stunning Stradivari model with a gorgeous two-piece back. A full, rich varnish covers it.
The sound is powerful, clear and rich, as you would expect from a Becker made at the height of his powers. This Carl G. Becker violin has a back length of 35.7 cm.
The year 1925 was a turning point for him. He began numbering his instruments, and he started his summers of making in Wisconsin. So this violin comes from exactly that moment.
The materials tell the same story. The wood is fine, the varnish is full, and the workmanship shows a maker in total command. For a player who wants a genuine best-period Becker, this Carl G. Becker violin was an outstanding find, equally at home in the orchestra, the recital hall and the studio.
The Maker
Carl G. Becker was born in 1887, the son of a celebrated violin teacher and the grandson of the maker Herman Macklett. He finished his first violin at fourteen and worked with Lyon and Healy from 1902. In 1924 he joined William Lewis and Son in Chicago, where he became their leading connoisseur, maker and restorer.
From 1925 until 1947 he spent his summers making new instruments at his lakeside home in Pickerel, Wisconsin. Later he founded Carl Becker and Son with his son, and he worked into his late nineties.
A Carl G. Becker violin ranks among the finest American instruments of its time. His best-period work draws particular attention from players and collectors.
