The Violin
Carl H. George made this violin in 1914. It is a beautiful Guadagnini-style instrument, and it remains in excellent condition. The Guadagnini pattern gives it an elegant outline and a focused, powerful voice.
The sound is rich and powerful, with a broad spectrum of colors. This Carl H. George violin gives a player plenty to work with in every register. The back measures 35.5 cm.
More than a century on, it is still fully ready for serious playing. Because the tonal palette is so wide, this Carl H. George violin especially rewards players who like to shape their sound. The varnish and wood have aged handsomely too.
That suits solo repertoire and chamber music alike. Also, the Guadagnini outline gives it a balanced, handsome look. For an advancing student or a working player who wants real color from an instrument with some history behind it, this Carl H. George violin was a strong choice.
The Maker
Carl H. George lived from 1882 to 1950, and he was born in Hamburg, Germany. He moved first to Canada. Then, in 1896, he settled in Chicago, which was fast becoming one of the most important centers of the American violin trade.
He worked for Ferron and Wagner there. In 1898 he partnered with Wagner to form Wagner and George.
So a Carl H. George violin reflects both European training and Chicago workshop culture. The city’s shops of that period trained and employed many of the country’s best makers, and instruments from this circle still appeal to players looking for quality and character at a fair price.
