The Violin

This Carlo Antonio Testore violin from 1734 is a gorgeous example of his work. The instrument began life as a small viola, and a later hand cut it down to violin dimensions. The eyes of the f-holes were slightly altered to suit the new size.

The sound is rich and powerful, with fantastic projection. This Carlo Antonio Testore violin has a back length of 35.85 cm.

Its origins as a viola may help explain that depth and power. Because the conversion was done well, it makes a strong case for how successful these reductions can be in the right hands.

For a player, the projection is the headline. It carries in solo and orchestral playing alike, and the certificate gives full confidence in the attribution. Also, the unusual history makes this Carlo Antonio Testore violin a conversation piece wherever it goes.

The Maker

Carlo Antonio Testore was the eldest of Carlo Giuseppe Testore’s sons, and he worked in Milan until about 1765. His instruments still show the Grancino influence visible in his father’s work. His workmanship is often quick and less refined, sometimes with false purfling on the back and flat-backed pegboxes.

That practical style may reflect his father’s early death, which left Carlo Antonio and his sixteen-year-old brother Paolo in charge of the Milan business. Later his son Giovanni assisted him toward the end of his career.

What his instruments lack in polish they repay in sound. So a Carlo Antonio Testore violin gives players the strong, direct voice of the Milanese school, which keeps his work in steady demand today.
