The Cello Bow
This fine cello bow by Charles Bazin combines considerable strength with a lively and responsive playing quality. Bazin crafted the octagonal stick from select pernambuco and fitted it with an ebony and ivory faceplate. He silver-mounted the ebony frog with elegant Parisian eyes, and the ebony adjuster carries a matching silver overlay. A short sterling-silver tinsel winding and leather thumb grip complete the bow’s traditional presentation.
Weighing 77.8 grams, the bow feels exceptionally stable in the hand. It offers excellent spring and resilience throughout the stick, and as a result draws a powerful, focused sound. Meanwhile, it remains comfortable, controlled, and highly responsive.
The Maker
Charles Nicolas Bazin was born in Mirecourt, France, in 1847. He trained within the workshop of his father, François Xavier Bazin, and assumed leadership of the family workshop while still a young man. Since then, his name has stood for strong, dependable bows marked by clean workmanship, excellent playing qualities, and a distinctly French character. His workshop also helped shape subsequent generations of French bow makers, securing the Bazin family’s lasting place in the history of the craft.
