The Cello

Charles J.B. Collin-Mezin made this cello in 1882, and it fully lives up to the reputation his instruments built among the great musicians of his era. The cello produces an absolutely beautiful tone, with a radiant top end bolstered by deep, rich lower strings.

The Maker

Charles J.B. Collin-Mezin was born in Mirecourt, France, and began his training in violin making under the direction of his father, C.L. Collin. In 1868, he moved to Paris, where he quickly established himself as one of the premier French luthiers of his generation.

Collin-Mezin’s eye for detail and relentless pursuit of perfection set his instruments apart from those of his competitors. As his reputation grew, some of the nineteenth century’s greatest musicians, including Joseph Joachim and Camillo Sivori, began playing his instruments. As a result, Collin-Mezin’s name became closely associated with exceptional French craftsmanship and tonal excellence.

This cello carries that same legacy forward, reflecting the meticulous standards that made Collin-Mezin one of the most respected makers of his time.
