The Violin Bow
A fine French violin bow by Charles Nicolas Bazin, made in Mirecourt circa 1905 and branded LYON & HEALY A CHICAGO. The round stick is fashioned from attractive red-brown pernambuco and measures 73.05 cm. in length. The ebony-lined head is fitted with an ivory tip plate. The ebony frog features pearl eyes and finely engraved sterling silver mountings. The ebony adjuster is similarly decorated with engraved silver rings and a silver cap. A silver wire wrap and leather thumb grip complete the fittings.
The bow plays very well, offering excellent staccato, quick response, and exceptional maneuverability in the hand.
The Maker
Charles Nicolas Bazin (1847–1915) was one of the leading French bow makers of Mirecourt during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born into the important Bazin bow-making family, he trained under his father, François Xavier Bazin, before establishing his own workshop. His shop became highly successful and produced bows for numerous French and international violin dealers. Bazin’s work is admired for its consistent craftsmanship, elegant proportions, and excellent playing qualities. His bows remain highly sought after by musicians for their reliability, balance, and distinctly French character.
