The Viola Bow

Dating from circa 1890, this fine Charles Peccatte viola bow is branded “PECCATTE” clearly on both sides of the stick. The round stick is fashioned from select pernambuco and fitted with an ebony and ivory faceplate. Its ebony frog is mounted in sterling silver and inlaid with Parisian eyes, while the ebony adjuster is overlaid in silver. A whalebone wrap and leather thumb grip complete the bow.

In playing, the stick feels lively and responsive, with excellent agility and a particularly strong staccato. It offers the quick articulation and energetic handling needed for demanding repertoire while retaining the substance expected from a fine viola bow.

The Maker

Charles Peccatte was born in Mirecourt in 1850, the son of François Peccatte and nephew of Dominique Peccatte. He trained with his stepfather, Auguste Lenoble, before joining the workshop of J.B. Vuillaume, where he worked under François Nicolas Voirin. Peccatte later established his own Paris workshop and earned medals at the Antwerp and Paris exhibitions. His bows are admired for their strength, lively handling, and distinctive craftsmanship. He also employed the celebrated bow maker Eugène Sartory.
