The Cello Bow

This cello bow, owned by renowned cellist Ronald Leonard, is an exceptional example of work by this celebrated maker. The bow remains in very good condition, with all condition matters carefully and professionally addressed. The frog has received a 4 mm cheval on both sides, and there is moderate thumb wear near the leather grip, consistent with professional use. A narrow 1 mm crack at the tip, located on the audience side at the back of the mortise, has been beautifully restored. The bow plays extremely well, offering even balance, comfortable weight distribution, and a confident, controlled response.

The Maker

Claude Auguste Thomassin (1865–1942) was a French bow maker who, like his first cousin Louis, broke from the family’s saddle-making tradition to pursue bow making. He apprenticed with Charles Nicolas Bazin, a dominant influence in late-19th-century Mirecourt, and began working for the Paris firm of Gand & Bernardel around 1885. Surrounded by followers of the Voirin school, Thomassin absorbed its influence while developing a personal model, seen especially in his increasingly rounded ferrules. He remained with Bernardel until 1901, later working independently and for other makers.
