The Cello
Made in Paris in 1718, this cello is a rare and well-preserved example of the work of one of France’s most highly regarded early 18th-century makers. The two-piece, quarter-cut maple back shows strong, even flames that rise from the center joint, complemented by plainer ribs and a tightly flamed scroll by another maker. Its two-piece spruce top, marked by an irregular grain, adds to the instrument’s individuality and charm. A deep, dark red-brown varnish, beautifully matured over a plain golden ground, lends the cello a distinguished and time-softened patina.

Claude Pierray was a French instrument maker active in Paris during the early 18th century.
