The Viola Bow
This exceptional viola bow dates from circa 1830 and was made in the workshop of Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume by this renowned French maker. The bow features a round pernambuco stick of exceptional quality with a strong, bold head design characteristic of his work. The head is fitted with an ebony and ivory faceplate, and the ebony frog is mounted in silver and inlaid with pearl eyes. The ebony adjuster is finished with two silver bands and a pearl end dot.
The bow is documented as Bow No. 11 in Bowmakers of the Peccatte Family by Paul Child and remains in excellent condition. Wonderfully balanced in the hand, it plays exceptionally well, producing a beautiful, supported tone with clarity and control. It would be equally well suited to a serious player or as an important addition to a distinguished collection.
The Maker
Dominique Peccatte (1810–1874) is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in French bow making. Born in Mirecourt, he moved to Paris in 1826 to work in the shop of Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, where he was influenced by Jean Pierre Marie Persoit. His early bows, branded VUILLAUME A PARIS, already show the bold character that would define his mature work. After leaving Vuillaume around 1836, Peccatte worked with François Lupot and later took over the workshop. As an independent maker, he developed his distinctive hatchet-head style. Returning to Mirecourt in 1847, he continued making bows until around 1870. His work remains highly sought after by musicians and collectors today.
