The Violin Bow
We are proud to offer this rare violin bow in exceptional condition. It is a remarkable example of 19th-century French craftsmanship, preserved with unusual clarity and care. The stick retains its original elegance, with clean chamfers, strong edges, and well-preserved mountings in silver and ebony. The maker’s brand remains crisp and clear, a notable and increasingly uncommon detail. Both the frog and stick are free of cracks, reflecting the overall integrity of the bow. Examples of this quality and preservation are seldom encountered.
Fitted with Parisian eyes and weighing a well-balanced 60.5 grams, the bow offers excellent handling. It draws with confidence and control, providing clear articulation, responsive bounce, and ease across a wide range of bow strokes, from sustained legato to off-the-string playing.
For the performer or collector, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a bow that represents the height of French bow making while remaining fully capable of meeting serious musical demands.
The Maker
Dominique Peccatte (1810–1874) is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in French bow making. Born in Mirecourt, he moved to Paris in 1826 to work in the shop of Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, where he was influenced by Jean Pierre Marie Persoit. His early bows, branded VUILLAUME A PARIS, already show the bold character that would define his mature work. After leaving Vuillaume around 1836, Peccatte worked with François Lupot and later took over the workshop. As an independent maker, he developed his distinctive hatchet-head style. Returning to Mirecourt in 1847, he continued making bows until around 1870. His work remains highly sought after by musicians and collectors today.
