The Viola

This Douglas Cox viola is a copy of an 1800 Ceruti, crafted from New England-grown slab-cut maple. The two-piece back shows medium-wide horizontal flames under a rich amber-brown varnish over a golden ground. It produces a deep, resonant tone with excellent projection and clarity across all registers. The response is immediate and balanced, inviting expressive playing.

The Maker

Douglas Cox trained at the State Violin Making School in Mittenwald in the late 1960s and later served as head of restoration for J. Bradley Taylor, Inc. in Boston. Since 1981 he has focused on crafting new instruments, creating close copies of notable historical models. He has built more than 700 instruments, received multiple Violin Society of America awards, and his work is played by musicians worldwide.
