The Violin
Douglas Cox crafted this violin in 2008 in Brattleboro, Vermont. It is an excellent copy of the “Gibson” violin by Antonio Stradivari. In fact, it stands as an outstanding example of his finest workmanship. It also remains in excellent condition.
The violin has a big, warm tone. As a result, it can fill a room while staying round and pleasant. The back measures 35.2 cm.
The Gibson makes a distinctive model to copy. So the choice fits Cox’s long interest in unusual and noteworthy masters. This 2008 violin shows how closely Douglas Cox studies an original before he copies it.
For a player, a Douglas Cox violin from 2008 joins a Stradivari pattern and a big voice. It suits a serious student, a chamber musician or a professional. In addition, its excellent condition means it needs nothing before playing. That is why this Douglas Cox violin 2008 makes a practical choice for a working musician.
The Maker
Few American makers came to the craft through restoration the way Douglas Cox did. For ten years he served as head of the repair department and chief restorer at J. Bradley Taylor, Inc. in Boston. During that time he worked on the finest instruments in the New England area.
Before Boston, he trained at the State Violin Making School in Mittenwald, Germany, in the late 1960s. Then, in 1981, he left repair behind to make fine new instruments full time.
Since then he has built more than 700 instruments. He still stretches his abilities by building close copies of great instruments. Today, his work carries awards from the Violin Society of America, and artists play it around the world.
