The Violin

Douglas Cox made this violin in 2010 as a spectacular copy of the “Medici” by Antonio Stradivari. He finished it in a red brown varnish over a gorgeous two piece back of the finest quality wood. He also antiqued it remarkably well, and it remains in excellent condition.

The tonal qualities are phenomenal. Because the tone is big and warm, the violin suits the greatest soloists and performers. It carries power without losing warmth.

The Medici makes a demanding model to copy. So this 2010 violin shows Douglas Cox working at the level his years of restoration made possible. Its antiquing, in particular, reflects an eye trained on original masterpieces.

For a performer, a Douglas Cox violin from 2010 offers the look of a Stradivari with a new instrument’s health. In addition, the big, warm tone gives a soloist room to project. That is why this Douglas Cox violin 2010 appeals to players who want a true stage instrument.

The Maker

Douglas Cox built his career on a single idea. He wanted to understand what makes violins work. Close copies of unusual and noteworthy master instruments became his way of answering that question.

That approach grew from his background. First, he trained at the State Violin Making School in Mittenwald, Germany, in the late 1960s. Then he spent ten years as head of the repair department and chief restorer for J. Bradley Taylor, Inc. in Boston. There he serviced the finest instruments in New England.

Since 1981, Cox has devoted himself to making new instruments. He has built more than 700 of them. Also, his work has won awards from the Violin Society of America. Artists play his instruments in many musical settings around the world.
