The Violin

Evenness sets this violin apart, a Stradivari model that Douglas Cox made in 2011 as violin #760. It shows the refinement of a maker with decades of experience. It also reflects his long study of master instruments.

The sound is warm, rich and even. Because the voice stays balanced across the strings, the player can move between registers without surprises. The back measures 35.6 cm.

An even sound helps in every setting. In a section, it blends. Also, in solo work, it lets the player shape each phrase with control. This Stradivari model violin by Douglas Cox offers that consistency.

For a player, the Douglas Cox Stradivari model violin brings a classic pattern and a modern maker’s care together. It suits an advanced student, a chamber player or an orchestral musician. In addition, its balanced voice rewards years of daily work. That is why a Stradivari model violin from Douglas Cox makes a strong long term partner.

The Maker

Douglas Cox learned the violin from the inside out. His training began at the State Violin Making School in Mittenwald, Germany, in the late 1960s. That school gave him the discipline of the German tradition.

Next came a decade in Boston. There he led the repair department and served as chief restorer for J. Bradley Taylor, Inc. As a result, he handled the finest instruments in the New England area.

In 1981 he turned to making full time. Since then he has built more than 700 instruments, many of them close copies of master violins. Today, his work holds awards from the Violin Society of America, and artists play it in many musical settings.
