The Violin
Eero Haahti made this violin in 2009, a beautiful copy of Guarneri del Gesu’s Il Cannone. He built it to show how the original may have looked when it was new. A full orange-brown varnish covers it, with no antiquing or distressing of any kind.
The sound stays just as faithful to the del Gesu design. This Eero Haahti violin is rich and powerful, and it grows stronger the harder a player pushes it. The back measures 35.7 cm.
Il Cannone is one of the most famous violins in the world, and Paganini once owned it. Any copy invites comparison, so an Eero Haahti violin has to stand on its own sound. Because Haahti has restored del Gesu instruments himself, his copy carries real authority.
So this Eero Haahti violin is a thoughtful, player-focused take on a legendary model. For a player who wants that power in a new, unantiqued instrument, it was a superb choice. It should also keep developing with years of playing.
The Maker
Eero Haahti began his career as workshop manager for Etienne Vatelot in Paris. There he took charge of restoring Stradivari and Guarneri violins, which is rare experience for any maker.
Players seek him out for restoration work, and his instruments and bows are played in orchestras throughout Europe. In 2010 he won several awards at the VSA competition, including a gold medal.
He has since moved to Ficulle in Umbria, Italy, where he continues to make fine violins. So an Eero Haahti violin brings deep firsthand knowledge of the great Cremonese instruments into a new one.
