The Violin Bow

This fine bow, made between 1935-40, was crafted on a special model commissioned by Professor Magadur of the Conservatoire de Rennes. It features a distinctive low frog, reduced to 18.5mm from the standard 20mm, giving it a unique playing feel. Light in weight, the bow offers a warm, resonant tone with excellent clarity. Its refined balance allows for effortless control, making it particularly well-suited for spiccato while maintaining depth and richness in sustained passages.

The Maker

Emile-Auguste Ouchard (1900-1969), son of master bow maker Emile François Ouchard, was a distinguished French bowmaker who refined his craft alongside his father at the renowned Mirecourt shop of Cuniot-Hury. After establishing his own workshop in Paris in 1938, he entered his golden period (1940-1960), creating exceptional violin bows marked by increasing head strength and refined craftsmanship. His career took him from Paris to New York and Chicago, where he worked with prestigious firm William Lewis & Son. Ouchard’s fine violin bows are celebrated for their perfect balance, remarkable strength, and superior tonal clarity. His masterful bows remain highly sought after by professional violinists and collectors worldwide, particularly those crafted during his golden period.
