The Violin

This handsome violin by Émile Mennesson was made in Reims in 1886 and is numbered 1924. Built on a Stradivari model, it features a beautiful one-piece back of quarter-cut maple with medium-wide flames ascending from the bass to the treble side. The ribs and scroll are of matching maple. The two-piece spruce top has fine, straight grain at the center, widening considerably toward the flanks. A rich red-brown varnish over a golden ground gives the violin a particularly attractive appearance. In excellent condition, it offers a lovely, bright and clear tone with excellent projection and an immediate, responsive character.

The Maker

Émile Mennesson (1842–1925) was a French violin maker active in Reims during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He established a successful workshop producing violins, violas, and cellos, often inspired by the classical Italian models of Stradivari and Guarneri. Mennesson’s instruments are known for their careful workmanship, attractive materials, and distinctive varnish, and many were individually numbered. He also produced instruments under the trade name “E. Mennegand,” which became widely known in France and abroad. His work remains well regarded among French instruments of the period.
