The Violin
Enrico Marchetti made this violin in Turin in 1926, in the final years of a long career at the heart of the Turinese school. It carries the refinement that made him one of the city’s most respected makers.
The sound is beautifully bright and projecting, and it carries well in a hall. This Enrico Marchetti violin has a back length of 35.7 cm.
Turin produced some of the most important Italian makers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Its instruments are known for elegant workmanship and a clear, projecting voice. So the school has a recognizable signature, and an Enrico Marchetti violin sits squarely inside it.
This Enrico Marchetti violin was made by a maker with more than fifty years of experience behind him. For a player who wants a bright, projecting Italian voice from a respected name, it was an excellent choice. As one of his late works, it also reflects the full weight of that long career.
The Maker
Enrico Marchetti lived from 1855 to 1930, and he ranks among the finest Turinese makers of the 20th century. He moved to Turin in 1874. He apprenticed first in the workshop of Benedetto Gioffredo, known as Rinaldi, and later with Antonio Guadagnini. In 1881 he opened his own business.
His early work showed great promise, and it won numerous medals. For about twenty years he traveled frequently between Turin and the Piedmontese town of Cuorgne, changing his labels to reflect where he was working.
Around 1912 he returned to Turin, and he worked steadily there until his death. So an Enrico Marchetti violin is a fine example of the Turin tradition at its most refined.
