The Violin

Striking maple and a warm red-brown varnish give this violin a particularly bold and handsome appearance. The two-piece maple back displays deep, wide flames descending from the center joint, with ribs and scroll fashioned from matching maple. The two-piece spruce top has straight, wide grain that broadens toward the flanks. Particularly attractive is the carefully worked, rolled edge, which lends the instrument additional character. A thick red-brown oil varnish over a golden ground completes the violin’s rich visual appearance.

Tonally, the violin has a rich, deep voice with exceptional clarity and resonance. The sound is full and colorful without sacrificing definition, producing a strong, ringing response across the instrument.

The Maker

Enrico Clodoveo Melegari was born near Parma in 1835 and later established himself as a violin maker in Turin. Before taking up violin making professionally, he worked in the shipyards of Genoa and Turin and was also known to have played the violin in his youth. He later worked alongside his brother Pietro under the name Fratelli Melegari. Largely independent of the established Turin school, Melegari developed a distinctive and highly individual approach to violin making. He died in Turin in 1895.
