The Violin
Eric Benning made this Eric Benning Bergonzi violin in Los Angeles in 2021, on a Carlo Bergonzi model. The one-piece back is gorgeous Bosnian maple from the 1930s, and the two-piece top is Northern Italian spruce from the same decade.
A beautiful set of mountain mahogany pegs and a boxwood tailpiece finish it. The tone is rich and powerful, with a wonderful ability to draw color and depth. The back measures 35.6 cm.
Wood that has seasoned for nearly a century is one of the most valuable materials a maker can work with. Because of it, this Eric Benning Bergonzi violin has a depth and responsiveness that is unusual in a new instrument.
The mountain mahogany pegs add a distinctive, handsome touch as well. So this Eric Benning Bergonzi violin suits professional players who want a powerful, colorful modern instrument built from exceptional aged materials. Its combination of wood, fittings and sound makes it stand out among recent Benning instruments.
The Maker
Eric Benning is the master luthier behind Benning Violins in Los Angeles. He builds instruments modeled on the great Cremonese and Italian masters, from carefully selected and aged tonewoods.
The Bergonzi model is one of his favorites for its strong, focused sound. Each Eric Benning Bergonzi violin reflects his close study of the original instruments, and his focus stays on a player-ready voice.
Carlo Bergonzi worked in Cremona in the generation after Stradivari, and his instruments are known for a bold, powerful character. Benning builds his Bergonzi-model violins to carry that strength into a modern instrument.
