The Violin
Eric Benning made this Eric Benning Guadagnini violin in Los Angeles in 2003. He modeled it after the 1750 G.B. Guadagnini Charles Reade. A gorgeous two-piece Bosnian maple back shows flames ascending from the center. The two-piece top is Northern Italian spruce.
The varnish is a deep red on a golden ground, full and not antiqued. Like the original Guadagnini, the instrument is petite. It sounds bright and rich, with a penetrating quality, and the back measures 35.1 cm.
A petite Guadagnini model suits players who want power and brilliance in a comfortable size. This Eric Benning Guadagnini violin delivers both, and the clean varnish shows off the beauty of the maple rather than hiding it.
It also expresses the Benning workshop’s approach directly. The materials are fine, the study of the original is close, and the voice is built for the stage. So this Eric Benning Guadagnini violin remains one of the most striking copies to leave the bench.
The Maker
Eric Benning is the master luthier behind Benning Violins in Los Angeles. He builds instruments modeled on the great Cremonese and Italian masters, from carefully selected and aged tonewoods.
Professionals and serious students alike play his violins. Each Eric Benning Guadagnini violin reflects his close study of the original instruments, and his focus stays on a strong, player-ready sound.
G.B. Guadagnini is one of the most admired makers of the 18th century, and players prize his violins for brilliance and projection. Benning builds his copies to capture that character while giving a player the reliability of a modern instrument.
