The Violin
Eric Benning made this Eric Benning Vieuxtemps violin in Los Angeles in 2022. He worked after the renowned Vieuxtemps Guarneri del Gesu of 1741. The two-piece back is gorgeous Bosnian maple from the 1930s, and the top is Northern Italian spruce from the same era.
Boxwood fittings from Bois d’Harmonie complete it. He antiqued the varnish expertly to capture the essence of the original. The tone is rich and powerful, with depth, color and an immediate response. The back measures 35.3 cm.
Immediate response is one of the qualities players value most in a del Gesu model. It means the instrument speaks the moment the bow touches the string.
So this Eric Benning Vieuxtemps violin pairs that responsiveness with aged wood and careful antiquing. The look and the sound both honor the original. For a player who wants del Gesu power and color with modern reliability, this Eric Benning Vieuxtemps violin was an ideal instrument. The Bois d’Harmonie fittings add a refined finishing touch.
The Maker
Eric Benning is the master luthier behind Benning Violins in Los Angeles. He builds instruments modeled on the great Cremonese and Italian masters, from carefully selected and aged tonewoods.
