The Violin

Paganini’s 1742 Guarneri del Gesu, known as Il Cannone, inspired this violin, which Eric Benning made in 2018. He built it in Los Angeles as a tribute to that maker and that violin. The back, sides and scroll use Bosnian maple from the 1920s.

The top comes from Northern Italian spruce of the same period. In addition, he antiqued the varnish tastefully to echo the original. The sound is rich and powerful, with a clear, penetrating edge. The back measures 35.4 cm.

Guarneri del Gesu worked in Cremona, and Il Cannone ranks among his most famous violins. So Eric Benning took on a demanding model with this 2018 Cannone violin. The wood, nearly a century old when he carved it, adds to its character.

A soloist who needs projection should consider this Cannone violin by Eric Benning from 2018. Its clear, penetrating voice suits music that must carry. It also rewards players who love the Guarneri sound. In short, this 2018 violin from Eric Benning honors the Cannone legend while it serves a working musician.

The Maker

Eric Benning reflects the traditions of the Italian masters, yet he brings a modern approach to tone. This copy shows both sides of that balance, from the antiqued varnish to the voice.

His instruments are in demand with orchestra members, including several from the LA Philharmonic. Distinguished teachers and soloists also play them.

Over his career he has made more than 145 handcrafted stringed instruments. He began at age 11 under his violinmaking parents. Today he still works as the house luthier of Benning Violins in Los Angeles.
