The Violin
Eric Benning made this Eric Benning Balestrieri violin in Los Angeles in 2016, based on the model of the 18th-century Mantuan master Tommaso Balestrieri. The one-piece back is stunning.
Balestrieri’s instruments are admired for their bold, powerful sound. This violin follows that character with a powerful, full and rich tone, and the back measures 35.4 cm.
The Balestrieri model is a less common choice than Stradivari or Guarneri. Because of that, this Eric Benning Balestrieri violin has a distinctive character of its own, and it stands apart from most modern copies on the market.
Its one-piece back makes it as striking to look at as it is powerful to play. So this Eric Benning Balestrieri violin suits a player who wants something different from the usual models, with a big, full voice and a back that stands out on any stage. In short, it is a bold and beautiful instrument.
The Maker
Eric Benning is the master luthier behind Benning Violins in Los Angeles. He builds instruments modeled on the great Cremonese and Italian masters, from carefully selected and aged tonewoods.
Professionals and serious students alike play his violins. Each Eric Benning Balestrieri violin reflects his close study of the original instruments, and his focus stays on a strong, player-ready sound.
Tommaso Balestrieri worked in Mantua in the mid-18th century, and players prize his instruments for a robust, generous voice. Fine originals are scarce and expensive today, so a well-made copy is how most players meet the model. Benning carries that same boldness into a modern instrument built for today’s performers.
