The Violin
Eric Benning made this Vieuxtemps violin in Los Angeles in 2019, following the Guarneri ‘Vieuxtemps’ of 1741. The top is two-piece Northern Italian spruce of exceptional quality from the 1920s. The back and ribs match in Bosnian maple from the 1930s.
The voice is powerful and clear. It is also rich and penetrating, so it fills a room with ease. In short, the 2019 Vieuxtemps violin by Eric Benning has the strength a performer needs. The back measures 35.4 cm.
Guarneri del Gesu worked in Cremona, and the ‘Vieuxtemps’ is one of his best-known violins. So Benning chose to honor it closely. He antiqued the varnish to resemble the 1741 original. In addition, Harmonie boxwood fittings with Fleur-de-lys carvings finish the instrument.
For a player, this Eric Benning Vieuxtemps violin from 2019 offered a del Gesu outline in long-seasoned wood. That is why it suited a soloist or section player who needs a voice that projects. Its antiqued finish also gave it the look of a much older instrument.
The Maker
Eric Benning is the house luthier of Benning Violins in Los Angeles. He is a master violinmaker, and he builds much of his work on classic Italian patterns like this one.
His approach joins the traditions of the Italian masters with a modern focus on tone. As a result, each copy aims to sound as strong as it looks.
Today, distinguished teachers, soloists and orchestra members seek out his violins, including several from the LA Philharmonic. Eric Benning’s 2019 Vieuxtemps violin belongs to that same body of work.
