The Violin
Eric Benning made this Balestrieri violin in Los Angeles in 2018, his latest Balestrieri copy at the time. The top is one-piece Bavarian spruce of exceptional quality from the 1920s. Meanwhile, the back and ribs use matching Bosnian maple from the 1950s.
The tone is powerful and clear. It is rich and penetrating as well. Because of that, this 2018 Balestrieri violin by Eric Benning speaks with authority in a hall. The back measures 35.4 cm.
Tommaso Balestrieri worked in Mantua, away from the Cremonese workshops. Benning antiqued the varnish to resemble the original violin from 1748. Harmonie boxwood fittings with Fleur-de-lys complete the look. Together, these details give the violin a strong period character.
A one-piece top is an unusual feature on a modern copy. So this Eric Benning Balestrieri violin from 2018 stood out on sight. For a player, it paired that look with a strong, focused voice. The seasoned tonewoods also added to its appeal. Spruce from the 1920s and maple from the 1950s had decades to settle before Benning carved them.
The Maker
Among all his models, Benning’s Balestrieri bench copies have become highly sought after. This violin shows why players ask for them. Each one follows the Mantuan outline with close attention.
Eric Benning began making violins at age 11 with his parents, both violinmakers. He then trained with Carl F. Becker Jr., his great-uncle, in the Becker school.
Today, teachers, soloists and orchestra members seek out his work, including several from the LA Philharmonic. In 2018, Eric Benning added this Balestrieri violin to his most requested pattern.
