The Violin
Eric Benning made this Vieuxtemps violin in Los Angeles in 2020, starting with wood that had rested for decades. He modeled it on the Guarneri ‘Vieuxtemps’ of 1741. The top is two-piece Northern Italian spruce of exceptional quality from the 1920s. The back and ribs are matching Bosnian maple from the 1930s.
Wood this old has had close to a century to settle. That is why makers prize it for a copy of an old Italian violin. Benning also antiqued the varnish to resemble the 1741 original. As a result, the 2020 Vieuxtemps violin by Eric Benning looks older than its date.
The result is a powerful and clear tone. It is rich and penetrating, too. The back measures 35.4 cm. In 2020, this was his latest violin on the ‘Vieuxtemps’ pattern.
For a player, this Eric Benning Vieuxtemps violin from 2020 offered a Guarneri outline with an old look. Even new, it had a strong, seasoned voice. That made it a fine choice for a soloist or chamber player. It also suited a student ready to step up to a professional violin.
The Maker
Eric Benning learned the craft from family. He began at age 11 with his violinmaking parents and later studied with his great-uncle, Carl F. Becker Jr.
His violins reflect the traditions of the Italian masters. However, he adds a modern approach to tone, so his copies aim to perform as well as they look.
Today his clients include distinguished teachers, soloists and orchestra members. In 2020, Eric Benning’s choice of wood for this Vieuxtemps violin showed the care behind that reputation.
